A major step for IKEA in Central America
With franchise agreements now signed, the move marks another milestone in IKEA's ongoing mission to become more accessible and affordable for the many people around the world. Sarton Group, which already operates IKEA stores in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the Spanish Islands, will be responsible for launching the brand in Panama and Costa Rica.
"We are happy to further extend our work together with Sarton Group and invite Panama and Costa Rica into the IKEA family," said Maria Johansson, IKEA Expansion Manager. "We see this agreement as a further strengthening of our long-term commitment and investment in the Americas."
Sarton Group brings local expertise
The new markets will benefit from Sarton Group's experience in the region, where it has already demonstrated a strong understanding of local consumer preferences. According to Tony Tavira, Sarton Group's Retail Manager, this knowledge will help shape IKEA's future presence in both countries.
"We're looking forward to further extending our strong and successful partnership... by assuming the franchise rights for Panama and Costa Rica," Tavira said. "We are confident that by offering beautiful home furnishing solutions and leveraging our expertise, we will contribute to growing the IKEA Brand."
No store dates announced – yet
As of now, IKEA has not revealed when or where the first stores will open in Panama or Costa Rica. However, with formal agreements now in place, more detailed timelines are expected in the near future.
IKEA currently operates more than 480 stores across 63 markets, attracting nearly 900 million store visits and 4.6 billion online visits annually. The brand's expansion into Central America is a natural next step in its broader global strategy.
